AudioEnable | Nomos Media and Radio in Schools

Nomos Media and Radio in Schools have teamed up to explore how developments in pervasive media can provide any user with the ability to freely capture and incorporate audio into their own website.

AudioEnable is a unique service developed by Nomos Media. It allows users to capture audio to their website, without the need for specific technical knowledge or expensive hardware or software. At present, AudioEnable uses an embedded media player to capture audio. This service has been successfully integrated with Radio in Schools (a simple podcasting platform), enabling pupils and teachers to create podcasts in a safe, secure environment - but the service is limited. How can AudioEnable become more agile? How can it utilise developments in pervasive media to become a liberated, flexible service? How can it build on its current success and respond to the needs of its audience?

This project will see AudioEnable launched on mobile devices. It will also support development of a bespoke Web Service that will transfer captured audio directly to user accounts. The research will broaden the application of the service, and extend its validity to new and wider audiences. Radio in Schools will user test the technology, offering pupils and teachers the freedom to podcast directly from any location, such as the classroom, staff room or from off-site trips.

Nomos Media is a Bristol-based web agency specialising in the design and development of  innovative, online technologies. The Nomos team have been involved in creating and building for the internet since the beginning and have substantial collective experience in the web industry. As early adopters of new technologies, they are always at the edge of new developments. Nomos have completed a range of successful work for clients such as the BBC, including the Doctor Who Website, BBC Green eBay ads and the BBC green interactive car chooser.

Radio in Schools is an independent, not for profit organisation. It offers a safe podcasting platform to allow schools, children and a new generation of listeners to get their voice heard in their own communities. Users can create content online through a Virtual Studio and share it via the web. The service is aimed at infant, primary & secondary schools across the UK, colleges, universities and youth organisations. Radio in Schools won the Arqiva Social Action Initiative Award 2006.
