A Micro-residency supporting development of Theatre JukeBOX, a new project by Stand + Stare Collective.
Theatre JukeBOX reinterprets the original arcade machine format and combines it with immersive, interactive theatre to create a unique narrative experience.
Using pre-recorded audio and visuals, combined with clue-solving and interaction with objects, the Jukebox is an arcade-style unit that delivers an experience similar to immersive theatre, but without the need for live actors. Designed for individuals, and lasting no more than two minutes at a time, the automated performance utilises pervasive technologies to deliver content that responds to user choices.
Micro-residencies enable artists to rapidly develop ideas, within the collaborative environment of the Studio. It provides a platform for critical and technical investigation and experimentation, and a forum in which new ideas can get off the ground.
You can watch a video about Theatre Jukebox over on dshed.net, or read the project report here.
Lucy and Barney Heywood are co-artistic directors of Stand + Stare Collective. They completed the micro-residency throughout June 2011, supported by Arts Council England. Following the completion of the residency, Stand + Stare stayed on as Studio residents to continue developing the project and exhibited at Bristol Old Vic's Ferment in July 2011.
