pervasive media studio

Theatre Sandbox

Theatre Sandbox is a national scheme to support the production of six new experimental pieces of theatre/performance which utilise pervasive media technologies. Setting out to grow an active community of peer learning and development, the scheme will take place over six months and include a structured programme of commissioning, mentoring, work in progress performances, knowledge exchange and PR/promotion.

The Theatre Sandbox scheme does not set out to establish or promote a micro-genre of technology-obsessed performance but rather to enable and support artists and theatre-makers who wish to integrate these tools into their practise. Commissions will be selected by a team of leading theatre-makers and producers for their artistic merit, their approach to conceptual development, their potential, and their openness to collaborative practise.

Theatre Sandbox is a unique opportunity to push forward understanding and potential usage of digital technology in theatre performance. It will link individual artists and institutions to cutting-edge research to produce new forms of interactive, immersive and inclusive experience. Theatre Sandbox is managed by iShed and supported by Arts Council England and will launch in early 2010. Join the Studio community to stay in touch with news about the scheme.
