We've had lots of lovely new residents join the Studio recently so here’s a quick introduction for everyone:

Kathy Hinde

Over the autumn, Kathy Hinde will compose a new work, Vocal Migrations, that combines live singing with electronically altered voices. She will be hot desking in the Studio and developing the technology with Tarim and Matthew Olden. The piece is inspired by how bats echo-locate by using sound to ‘see’ their surroundings and the project aims to employ bio-mimicry as a creative method. They are creating a new handheld device that uses sensors and mini-computers. These devices will affect the sounds of the singers voices based on where they are positioned in the performance space, creating a sonic and spatial experience. The composition will be developed with singers from Bristol, Bedford and beyond, including Mel McCree from the Bristol Feral Choir, and Kerry Andrew from vocal trio Juice. Vocal Migrations is commission by Bedford Creative Arts with additional funding from Arts Council England and support in kind from the Pervasive Media Studio

Opposable Games

Opposable Games build connected & multi-screen games for mobile devices and smart TV’s. They are currently nearing completion of their first game ‘clockwork racers’ a multiplayer race game for connected televisions, PCs, smart phones & tablets. You can see an early version in action here. In its infancy, the Opposable team actually hotdesked with us for a short while, holding meetings/sprints in our meeting room so don’t be alarmed if they look a bit familiar!

The Stick House

Back when we ran our South West Artists Residencies in 2011, Sharon Clark and Tom Burton worked on their fantastic vision for a theatrical space based on the magical realism of Angela Carter's work. Having secured funding from the Arts Council of England to complete their research and development, they're back in the Studio with producer Maggie Dunning and a creative team including, Sleepdogs (Tim X Atack & Tanuja Amarasuryia). The stick house project fuses live performance, music and pervasive media into a darkly haunting, yet beautiful experience. Working in collaboration, writer Sharon and creative technologist Tom will not only set out to create an exciting piece of performance, but will research how psychological effectors, such as low-level noise, lighting, touch and feel, in combination with pervasive technologies, can create more immersive experiences.

JA

On Monday Michael Johnson joined the Studio as a hotdesker on a three-month residency. His company JA was created to ensure opportunities exist to allow any private individual to participate in the peaceful hands on robotic exploration of space. He’ll be giving a Lunchtime Talk this Friday so come along to find out more about the project. Michael is excited to be resident at the Pervasive Media Studio and looks forwards to developing innovative digital media and other hands on approaches for bringing access to space to all and is interested in new partnership with other residents.

Will Luton

For the last few years Will has been Creative Director at Mobile Pie which some of you with a bit of Studio vintage will remember as one of our earliest residents in the old Studio space. Mobile Pie came back into the fold in 2010 to take part in Media Sandbox, using the city council’s open data to create Blossom Bristol, a mobile game which allowed players to plant virtual crops in any part of Bristol and watch as they flourish or fail depending on real environmental factors such as the city's air quality, water quality, weather and temperature.
Will has now branched out on his own to start up ‘Doctor Monolith’. He will be offering a consultancy service for free-to-play games and making some new games into the bargain. He is very interested in collaborating with other people in the Studio community as he embarks on this exciting new venture.
