pervasive media studio

Universities

UWE's DCRC is a fundamental element of the Pervasive Media Studio. The partnership promotes a reflexive mode of research aimed at asking questions that might otherwise be overlooked and research evaluated according to a wide range of applicatory and academic criteria. Creating an academic base in touch with practitioners, markets and users also unlocks funding streams in the increasingly important context of knowledge exchange. Professor Jonathan Dovey will be an AHRC-funded knowledge transfer fellow for 2010-2012.

PM Studio, the DCRC and UWE’s Play Research Group work closely with several universities such as Bristol University and with a range of departments, including Computer Science, Psychology, Social Informatics, Art & Design, Drama, Education, Cultural and Media Studies. Links with other academic institutions across the UK are constantly established and maintained.

The Studio offers the academic community an opportunity to teach and work in a unique context and brings together a network of researchers from both, Creative Arts and technology-based schools. DCRC’s international PhD researchers are housed in the studio, creating a diverse, lively and successful academic research culture.

University workshops

Tutorial sessions for both, the UWE MA in Media Practice and Culture and University of Bristol Computer Sciences, take place in the Studio. Piloted in 2008, students are also given technical support and the loan of kit to enable them to demonstrate their projects to a public audience.

PhD Residencies 2009

In January 2009 the studio awarded three residencies to UWE PhD students researching topics relating to pervasive media. Since then, the Studio has also welcomed PhD researchers from the University Southern Denmark, the Centre for Computer Games Research of the IT University of Copenhagen, the Sonic Arts Research Centre in Belfast and the Universitat Jaume I of Castellón.

"Thanks to the variety of interests and backgrounds of the residents, new insights and feedback always came from unexpected angles. The PhD seminar organized in the Digital Cultures Research Centre framework was helpful and had a good supportive spirit. I enjoyed the studio’s creative buzz very much, but also could always find the peace and quiet for writing when necessary. In my experience, Pervasive Media Studio is a unique hub for adventurous digital media activities." Olli Leino, Center for Computer Games Research in Copenhagen

"I carried out a temporary research stay at UWE for four months during summer 2009 and was based at the Pervasive Media Studio. I found a great working environment in which I was able to write most of my PhD dissertation and, at the same time, meet amazing people who were involved in different fields of digital media. The Studio’s collaborative spirit made the experience very enriching, because I learnt about other residents’ projects and was able to share some of my work with them, getting very interesting feedback. I loved attending to other residents’ presentations and, above all, casual chatting in the kitchen."  Marta Martín Núñez, Department of Communication Sciences, Universitat Joume I of Castellón.
